QF 13 Pounder - With Limber and Soldiers

Considered a light field gun, the 13 Pounder was highly mobile and could maintain a high rate of fire. Their mobility made them well-suited as a support weapon for cavalry divisions. During the first months of the Great War, they were widely deployed to help slow the German offensive.

Panther - Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D

About the Panther – Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D:

After the beginning of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, as German Panzers streamed across the Soviet Union, they were slowed by the appearance of a Soviet tank, the new T-34. The Germans found the Panzer IV’s low-velocity 75mm gun lacking against the T-34. A mildly panicked German High Command ordered the development of a new tank to combat this threat: Enter the Panzerkampfwagen V, better known as the “Panther”.

The Panther was deployed as a medium tank on all German fronts from mid-1943 to the war’s end in 1945. The Panther is often categorized into three major variants: Ausf. A, D, and G. Small adjustments were made between variants, including improvements to the commander’s cupola and the addition of a hull machine gun. The Ausf. G variant (1944) saw a complete overhaul of the hull to provide the tank with better survivability.

While having essentially the same Maybach engine as the Tiger I, the Panther had more efficient frontal hull armor and better gun penetration. The trade-off was weaker side armor, which made it vulnerable to flanking fire. Despite being classified as a medium tank by the Germans, the Panther’s weight was comparable to that of the heaviest Allied tanks.

Considered one of the best tanks in WWII for its excellent firepower and protection, its reliability was less impressive. When the Panther first deployed at Kursk, many broke down and were abandoned by their crews. Among those recovered, the complex engineering made the Panther difficult and time consuming to repair. Much like many other German tanks, the Panther outperformed comparable Allied tanks in combat — when it was actually functioning. Its high velocity 75mm main cannon and excellent maneuverability had no trouble dealing with both the T-34 and M4 Sherman.

Over 6000 Panthers in all variants were produced during the war. Despite their excellent performance, the Panthers and their crews were simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of Allied tanks produced — roughly 50,000 of both the M4 Sherman and T-34. This numerical advantage coupled with the loss of experienced tank crews in 1944-45 contributed to the eventual fall of the Third Reich.

About the Pak 40 – Anti-Tank Gun:

Designed shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the Pak 40 anti-tank project was shelved due to the lighting-fast success by the Wehrmacht. After Operation Barbarossa, the Pak 40 was immediately put into production with its battlefield debut during the battle for Kharkov in May 1942. The Pak 40 had a remarkably low silhouette, making it easy to conceal in spite of its size. The Pak 40 could defeat the heaviest Allied tanks up until the end of the war.

T-34 Model 1943

Tap the photo for a closer look!

About the T-34 Model 1943:

The most produced tank in history, the Soviet T-34/76 has seen decades of use across the world. In service since World War II, the T-34 was designed after the signing of the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Knowing that a future confrontation with Germany was likely, Stalin used this time to evaluate German armor technology and instructed his tank engineers to design something that could defeat German panzers.

Soviet experience in the Spanish Civil War (1935) and at Khalkhin Gol (1939) heavily influenced the development of the T-34. A simple design, the T-34 combined the speed and maneuverability of Soviet light tanks (BT-7, T-26) with adequate firepower to take on German panzers. As the project was kept secret, German commanders had little knowledge of the T-34 until Operation Barbarossa. When Panzer III and IV commanders first encountered the T-34, they were horrified to find that their shells bounced right off the sloped armor of the tank.

Historical accounts put the T-34 at almost every crucial engagement on the Eastern Front including the defense of Moscow, the counteroffensive at Stalingrad, and at the Battle of Kursk. The simple design of the T-34 allowed Soviet factories to produce massive numbers for the battlefield. Although less powerful than Panthers and Tigers, the sheer number of T-34s made up for this disparity. It is estimated that 60,000–70,000 T-34s were produced during the war.

As parts and ammunition are still available today, several nations still maintain small numbers of this iconic Soviet tank. Multiple online sources in 2017 recorded the use of T-34s in conflicts across both Yemen and Syria.

  • Crew: 4
  • Engine: V-2-34 V-12 diesel

M4 Sherman - Allied Medium Tank (2018)

Perhaps the best known Allied tank during World War II, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee. Named for the eccentric Union General William T. Sherman, the Sherman medium tank was mass produced to help offset better-armed German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. The American war machine produced over 50,000 Sherman tanks between 1941-1945.

WWII German Staff Car

The use of military staff cars began during the First World War. Before the invention of the automobile (and the radio), commanders had to remain close to the front when directing troops. The invention of the automobile allowed military leaders to visit the front at their leisure, reducing the risk of harm.

Cannone Da 75/32 - Modello 37

The Cannone da 75/32 was a towed artillery piece developed by Italy shortly before hostilities broke out in World War II. During the 1930’s, Italy recognized the need to upgrade its military hardware. As a result, they were able to replace their dated World War I hardware with new, better-suited weapons. Although effective and well-constructed, this gun could never be produced in enough numbers to sway the tide of battle against the Allies. After Italy’s surrender in 1943, Germany took ownership of these guns to continue the fight on the Italian front.

New Release: T-90MS Tagil – Main Battle Tank

T-90MS Tagil - Main Battle Tank

About the T-90MS Tagil – Main Battle Tank:

An upgrade on the T-90, the T-90MS Tagil is the current main battle tank produced by the Russian Federation. This variant features several updates in targeting technology, armor, and crew protection. Like many modern tanks, it strives to combine firepower, armor, and speed into a small package. Featuring a protected auto-loader cassette in the hull floor and speeds up to 35 mph (60 km/h), the Tagil is an excellent armored contender in 21st-century warfare.

At first glance, what sets the Tagil apart from its predecessors is the turret. Ammunition storage scattered around the crew compartment was the main cause of fires in the T-72 tank. Ten rounds of ammunition are now stored in a new protected bustle on the back of the turret instead of inside the crew compartment. Like other modern MBTs, the Tagil is equipped with rangefinders and machine guns that can be operated from inside the tank, reducing risk to the crew. It also deploys reactive armor and can be outfitted with an urban survival package.

Fairly new (2011) in design, the Tagil has seen combat in the Syrian Civil War, although not much is known about its effectiveness in the conflict.

Specifications:

  • Crew: 3
  • Armament: 125mm smoothbore 2A46M5, 2x 7.62 machine guns
  • Powerplant: V-84S2F diesel
  • Speed: 35 mph (60 km/h)
  • Range: 341 mi (550 km)

Additional information about this Brickmania custom building kit:

The T-90MS Tagil – Main Battle Tank includes the following features:

  • Brickmania Track Links™
  • Printed elements
  • Custom-printed Russian tanker minifigure
  • Rotating turret with elevating gun
