The Persian Gulf War followed the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait with a short conflict consisting of a U.S.-led coalition. Beginning in 1991, major military operations were short-lived as the Iraqi military was not prepared for the swiftness and precision of coalition forces. Although the conflict ended quickly, the failure to remove Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein from power would later result in the Second Gulf War of 2003.

About Bruno – 28 cm SK L/40 Railway Gun
Sometimes known as the Amiens Gun, the 28cm SK L/40 Railway Gun “Bruno” was produced by Germany within a series of monstrous artillery weapons. The advent of the railway gun was first seen during the American Civil War with the Confederacy deploying a 32-pound gun at Savage Station in June 1862.
As the First World War continued, each army continued to develop larger artillery pieces, eventually mounting naval guns on railway cars. These huge weapons often had a range of twenty miles or more, making them both formidable weapons and top priority targets for opposing armies. This tradition continued into the Second World War.
There were six 28cm railway guns produced for the German Army. One of the guns was involved in the Battle of Amiens, used to shell the city of Amiens during the summer of 1918. The gun was captured by the Australians during the Battle of Harbonnieres, a massive offensive by the Allies on August 8, 1918. The gun was brought back to Australia as a war trophy and is on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

About the “Black Bess” – Mark IV Heavy Tank:
The Black Bess was a Mark IV Female that served at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. The fate of the tank is largely unknown — it was either destroyed or captured by the Germans. There are only 2–3 known photos of the tank, but its service is noted in history books detailing the battle (and in one particularly popular video game, which erroneously featured the Black Bess as a male variant of the Mark IV).
The British Mark IV is often considered the world’s first main battle tank in regards to its production. Roughly 1,200 examples of the 30-ton tank were produced during the war. The Mark IV came in two variants, mostly based on the kind of weapons installed on the tank. The “female” tank came fitted with air-cooled Lewis machine guns and smaller side sponsons. The “male” version had larger sponsons to accommodate British 6-pounder guns that replaced some of the machine guns on the female variant. Other major differences include the entry hatches on either tank — female Mark IV tank crews had to enter underneath the sponsons, where male Mark IV tank crews entered through the rear of the tank.
Realizing the potential of massed armor, British commanders deployed 500 tanks at the Battle of Cambrai along the Hindenburg Line as a shock weapon designed to overwhelm German troops. Although the tanks had success breaking through German trenches at several locations, the German counteroffensive eventually pushed the British back towards their original lines. Historical accounts credit this battle as the first time tanks were used en masse.

About the Panzer III Ausf. E – German Medium Tank:
The workhorse of early German conquests, the Panzer III provided the necessary speed and armament for blitzkrieg tactics. Mobilized by Erwin Rommel’s Afrikakorps, the Panzer III (and its variants) remained the most numerous German tank during the North African campaign. It also played a key role during the invasion of France and the Low Countries in 1940. Although underpowered against French and British tanks, the sheer concentration of armor against thinly deployed Allied tanks allowed the smaller Panzer III to overwhelm Allied armor units.
The Ausf E variant served as the standard for future models beginning with the Ausf F. The chassis for this tank would also serve as the basis for the StuG III Ausf G tank destroyer.

About the Panzer III Ausf M/N:
The workhorse of early German conquests, the Panzer III provided the necessary speed and armament for blitzkrieg tactics. Mobilized by Erwin Rommel’s Afrikakorps, the Panzer III (and its variants) remained the most numerous German tank during the North African campaign. After Stalingrad and German defeat in North Africa, the Panzer III evolved to help replace German losses at major battles in Sicily and Kursk.
The Ausf M and N were both late-war variants of this iconic German tank. The Ausf M was fitted with a modified exhaust valve to allow the tank to ford rivers, a common occurrence in the campaign against the Soviet Union. It was also the last variant to be equipped with a 5 cm main gun. After 1943, most of the Panzer III assembly lines were converted to produce StuG IIIs, adapting to German defensive doctrine during the late years of the war.

About the StuG III Ausf G:
An example of refined German engineering, the StuG III Ausf G comprised the main production line of this armored assault vehicle. After several years of experimentation, the StuG III was standardized as the Ausf G variant, featuring extra ammunition storage and better rear armor. Combined with the vehicle’s low profile and powerful 75mm gun, these improvements provided German armor commanders with an effective mobile fighting vehicle for major engagements.
The StuG was also an incredibly effective defensive weapon. Several StuG commanders logged dozens of kills during Germany’s defensive operations of 1943–45. Often covered on the flanks by Panzer IVs, the StuG provided excellent antitank fire against medium tanks such as the T-34.

Designed shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the Pak 40 anti-tank project was shelved due to the lighting-fast success by the Wehrmacht. After Operation Barbarossa, the Pak 40 was immediately put into production with its battlefield debut during the battle for Kharkov in May 1942. The Pak 40 had a remarkably low silhouette, making it easy to conceal in spite of its size. The Pak 40 could defeat the heaviest Allied tanks up until the end of the war.
